“Byzantine Conundrum,” 2024, a mixed-media sculpture by emerging contemporary sculptor Grigorios Ilaridis at Base-Alpha Gallery, Antwerp. This collage-based sculpture features a 2D headless figure inspired by the Greek hero Heracles, positioned against a black metal grid. A neon purple halo encircles the missing head, inspired by Byzantine iconography. Three prominent 3D elements protrude from the figure: a white plaster club, which the figure seemingly leans on in contraposto, in the right hand, a plaster left hand gripping a 2D red acrylic "poisoned apple" that gives the illusion to be hanging from a string that originates mid-air above the sculpture, and a plaster lion’s head, protruding from the lionskin draped around the arm holding the apple. The upper part of the figure transitions from human into green bronze legs, adding texture and depth, while the white protruding elements contrast dynamically with the bright 2D collage base.
